bio
An award-winning journalist with extensive experience in editing, public
relations and Web site management, Howard Newman is well versed in virtually
all forms of communication.

In addition to having worked for two of the three largest newspapers in the
Boston area, he has a keen understanding of corporate communications.
Drawing on his experience as a reporter/editor and a public relations
professional, he thoroughly understands media relations – from both sides of
the news desk.

As a freelance writer, editor and public relations specialist, he is currently
creating press releases, newsletters, Web content and other vehicles that
enable his clients to attract business and media attention. Howard is also the
Communications Coordinator for the Melrose Energy Commission, a volunteer
group that helps the city and its citizens save energy.
Human services
In the past, he has served as the Senior Communications and Public Affairs Specialist for Vinfen Corporation,
one of the largest human services organizations in Massachusetts. At Vinfen, Howard enhanced the
organization’s public profile by revamping the Web site, producing effective marketing materials and obtaining
media placements.

Energy
Prior to his work at Vinfen, he was the Communications Director at the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE),
a nonprofit organization promoting energy-efficient products and technologies in the United States and
Canada. At CEE, he helped facilitate participation in nationwide energy conservation programs by providing an
effective communications network among 90-plus members.

This included management of several Web sites, production of a quarterly newsletter, media placements and
general communications support.

Print media
His journalism experience includes work for the Boston Globe, Patriot Ledger, Oakland Tribune, Associated
Press and United Press International. He won a first-place UPI Award, two New England Press Association
Awards and a Massachusetts Press Association Award.

Personal
In his spare time, Howard writes and performs acoustic music and runs a monthly nonprofit coffeehouse, Music
in Melrose. In conjunction with the coffeehouse, he organizes an annual benefit concert for a local food pantry.
He has produced four CDs on his own label.

A graduate of Northeastern University, Howard is a sports enthusiast who plays and coaches softball, and
skates in a weekly hockey group. He also provides radio color commentary for the Lowell Spinners, a Red Sox
Single-A farm team. He lives in the Boston area.
